5th International ASAMI Congress took place in S. Petersburg. It is great event in international medical life. Symbolically, that this Congress was in Russia, Alma Mater of Ilizarov method, in the country where the scientists made the biggest contribution and helped to spread the Ilizarov method all over the world.
Organizing committee put all forces to make the Congress at the highest level. Scientific reports and discussions were interesting and effective. Staying in Northern capital of Russia, St. Petersburg was very pleasant.
The work of the Congress showed that Ilizarov method is developing and improving very quickly. New technologies appear, old ones are improving. It increases scientific interest and effectiveness of experience exchange of specialists from all over the world. The success of scientists who apply Ilizarov method is obvious and incontestable. The participants of the congress had the unique possibility to get the most up-to-date information about the achievements of world science in the sphere of transosseous osteosynthesis.
Within a quarter of a century since International ASAMI foundation, Ilizarov method went beyond the bounds of classical orthopedics and traumatology. Nowadays it is applied in bone tumors management, vertebrology, defects filling, and ischemia. This method is also applied in foot and hand reconstruction. New techniques for pelvic fractures management, combined and gunshot trauma management were created. Nanotechnologies application (wires with nano coating) enabled to increase the rate of limbs lengthening in 2 times. And this is not complete list of Ilizarov apparatus application. The high-priority task for all of us is to use those effective techniques in clinical practice in all countries that are ASAMI members. And to perform this we need mutual cooperation, knowledge and experience exchange, training for high qualified specialists.
Today more countries became ASAMI members: Russia, Syria, Senegal, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. And it is one more proof of world triumphal parade of Ilizarov method. More and more doctors prefer and trust Ilizarov method as a method for loco-motor system treatment.
Our common task is to help young associations to gain new knowledge and experience.
I am sure that fruitful cooperation of scientists and qualified specialists from different countries will help to solve the prior tasks determined by international ASAMI and limb reconstruction association. If we will unite our forces the result will be excellent!
I wish you successful and creative work, new scientific discoveries, patience and strong will to learn more and apply theory in practice. In science the fame goes to those who persuade the world. Venture, and never be satisfied with what has already been achieved!
To ASAMI National Presidents:
 
28-30 May 2008 International ASAMI Meeting took place in St. Petersburg. 52 countries participated in this Meeting. 26 National ASAMI Presidents visited this Congress. By the opening of the congress we recieved 5 application to join International ASAMI.
 
At preliminary and final meetings of the National ASAMI Presidents was decided the following:
1. Presidents Committee accepted applications of the following countries: Russia, Syria, Senegal, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Now these countries have National ASAMI and they are members of International ASAMI as well.
The board did not support suggestion of M. Catagni about changing the name of the association but agreed to modify the name of the association to:
  International ASAMI & BONE RECONSTRUCTION ASSOCCIATION.
 
J.C. Bongiovanni suggested to form an executive committee which will be in Charge of the Association for the next 2 years term till the next International ASAMI meeting. The structure of the committee will be:
1-The current president who will be elected the Board every 2 years during the International meeting.
  2-President elect who will be elected as the next president for 2 years.
  3-X-president.
  4-General secretary: nominated by the board for preparation of the committee meeting & the board meetings. He shall keep a registry of the members & responsible for correspondance with the members.
The suggestion was passed with a solid vote.
Choosing the International ASAMI & BONE RECONSTRUCTION ASSOCCIATION Presidents there were 2 candidates: prof. Shevtsov (Russia) and prof. Nuno Craveiro Lopes (Portugal). With majority of votes Prof. Shevtsov was elected current President of International ASAMI & BONE RECONSTRUCTION ASSOCCIATION. Election was democratic. Nobody placed pressure on anyone. And there was only one candidate for general secretary - prof. Hosny. He passed by a solid vote.

     President  elect:  Prof. Nuno Craveiro Lopes
      General Secretary: Prof. Gamal Ahmed Hosny
Therefore, the current Executive committee is:
     1-President:  Prof. Shevtsov
     2- President elect: Prof. Nuno Craveiro Lopes
     3- X-President: Prof. Bongiovanni
    4- General secretary: Prof. Gamal Ahmed Hosny
 
5. - Dr Catagni suggested to transfer the site of the next meeting to Spain  and the Borard dropped this suggestion and decided that the board members are committed to the results of voting in Kyoto:Brasil is the site of the next meeting after 2 years & Bongiovanni is the host,if anything erupts Egypt will be the place & Hosny is the Host.
6 -The Board discussed the site of the next meeting in Europe 2012 & 2 countries applied: Greece & Portugal.The rsults of the vote was for Greece.
